Group Camp 2018

Dear Parent/Carers,

This year our Group Camp will be at Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre in the New Forest from Friday 28th till Sunday 30th September 2018. This activity centre is one of the best in the South and it is in a beautiful part of the country with fantastic outdoor space.

How about your child having a go at the Gladiator Challenge, various Climbing activities, Zip Wires, Boulders, Tomahawk Throwing, Shelter Building, Team Building activities, Go-Karting, Paddle Games and Raft Building. They also have facilities for Aeroball, Crazy Golf, Volleyball, Frisbee Golf and a fantastic Adventure Course. The site has well over 30 different activities to choose from.

The cost of the whole weekend, which will include a coach to and from the venue, food and all activities for your child will be between £60-£80.

Group Camp is a fantastic opportunity for your child to try new things, surrounded by their friends in a safe outdoor environment. Beavers will be sleeping inside, as will the younger Cubs. Some of the older Cubs will be camping alongside the Scouts. We will have an indoor base with the camping facilities right outside. We have a kitchen to do the cooking in and serve up all the meals (and Cake). We will of course have Arnie’s infamous camp fires, with marshmallows and a sing song, on the Friday and Saturday night. We would aim to leave the church at approx 5pm on the Friday and return by 6pm on the Sunday.

A form will be sent out soon, so please fill in the form and return to one of your child’s Leaders(s). The £20 deposit can be paid via OSM (unfortunately this deposit is non-refundable). Anyone with more than one child will have any other child’s cost reduced by £10.

If you would like your child to go and embrace this fantastic weekend, but you may not be able to raise all the funds required, please talk to John, Lesley, Tim or Mandy and I am sure the Group will be able to help.

Yours in Scouting.
78th Kingswood Scouts.

Earth Hour 2018

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour started as a symbolic “lights out” event in Australia just over a decade ago and is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for our planet and the environment.

Some 187 countries and territories took part last year, and more than 3,100 landmarks went dark.

Why is it Important?

Our planet is under threat from climate change and a staggering loss in biodiversity. Earth Hour is our chance to talk about what this means, and take action.

Visit the website to see what you can do!

Happy Holidays

Can you believe it? We are reaching the end of another year, which means we are almost half way through our season. Tonight is our last group night of 2017.

And what an adventure it has been so far, with a fantastic group camp, loads of outdoor activities and getting back into the new building.

We are also looking forward to lots more great activities to come, there are camps in the planning and who knows what else there is in store.

For now we would like to wish you all happy holidays and hope that you will have a great Christmas period. We will be back on Wednesday 10 January 2018.

Enjoy,
78th Kingwood Scout Group

Remembrance Sunday

As part of this year’s Remembrance Sunday, the 78th Kingswood Group are attending the British Legion Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Page Park, Staple Hill. There will be other groups from the Scouting Association attending, along with members of various armed forces, both past and present.

This is a VERY special occasion and an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to represent themselves in front of the older generation. As such, all attendees must be in FULL uniform and wearing a Poppy, including clean and tidy neckerchiefs! Please ensure that your child has a coat, ideally a pac-a-mac that can be packed down small. If the weather is cold, then extra layers can be worn under their uniform. As a mark of respect we always ensure that full uniform is on display unless it is raining. (This includes dark shoes – no trainers, no jeans)

We will be meeting at the Band Stand in Page Park at 10.30am, where we will then parade as a group to the service area to be positioned by the British Legion. The 78th will be laying a wreath at the cenotaph. When this service is over, we will be walking with the 28th and 85th Kingswood Groups, and the 151 Fishponds,  to the Downend Scout Memorial for a small Scouting Service, which this year will be lead by the 85th .

Parents are encouraged to attend the service in Page Park and accompany us along the pavements to Downend Memorial as the parade moves. Alternatively your child can be collected outside the Sainsbury’s Local, Downend for collection around 11:30 / 11:45.

We know that you recognise the significance of this year’s Anniversary commemorations and therefore look forward to seeing the younger generation support this important event.

Yours in scouting,

The 78th Committee and Leaders

New Payment Schedule Setup

Dear Parents/Carers,

As most of you already know we use Online Scout Manager (OSM) in our group for taking payments for subs, camps and other events. Parents/carers will have the option to setup direct debits for subs so that payments can be taken on a scheduled bases.

As there were system issues (through no fault of you parents/carers) with taking payments over the last couple of terms all existing Direct Debits have now been cancelled and new ones have been setup on the system. This week all parents/carers of whom the system have flagged issues will be asked to setup a new Direct Debit for this term. Those who already have paid will not have to setup a new Direct Debit until the next term date, which is January 1st 2018.

If you already have made a payment via Cheque or Cash it is possible that this has not been registered on OSM yet, please let us know and we will update our OSM records.

Apologies for the inconvenience, it has taken some planning and executing to setup the new schemes.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us, either via email or on Wednesday evening.

Operation Christmas Child

Dear Parents,
The Church are participating this year in ‘Operation Christmas Child’. This is where shoeboxes are filled for children and distributed to worn torn countries who are in desperate need to help children.
Here’s the web page for more information about what they do; –
Following the success of previous years, the Church wants donations of ‘gifts’ and these will be taken to a central point to be collated into boxes.
I have cut and pasted from the website the gift suggestion list can be found here. Please bring these along to the church during the next two weeks.
Many thanks

AGM 2017

As some of you are already aware from the timetable, we are holding a very quick AGM this Wednesday at 7.00pm. It is mainly to give you an overview of how the 78th Group is doing, future plans and the current committee members. If you would like to join our committee then you would be most welcome, in whatever capacity you feel you could make a positive contribution to continue making this a thriving group.

We will then quickly move on to Group camp; an opportunity to update you on activities and plans etc, and to answer questions. Please remember to bring completed health forms.

If your Beaver or Cub is not going to camp, then you can of course leave after the AGM.
