We are 65 years old

Happy birthday to us! Today it has been 65 years since our group started way back when in 1959.

Founded by Ken Tadd, our group had it’s very first meeting on Tuesday March 5th 1959. Originally named 78th Bristol Scout Group, this later changed when districts came around and we were renamed as 78th Kingswood Scout Group.

Starting off small, we have grown over the years to become a group with a strong Beaver colony, Cub pack and Scout troop, building relationships with the community.

Celebrations will take place later in the season.

Hip hip hooray!

Happy Holidays

As you take a break from your adventures this holiday season, we hope you’ll find time to reflect on all that you’ve accomplished as a Scout. You’ve shown courage, resilience, and a spirit of adventure that is truly inspiring. We wish you all the joy and wonder of the holidays, and may you be surrounded by love and kindness.

Remember, the true spirit of the holidays is found not in gifts or festivities, but in the relationships we build and the memories we create. So take time to cherish those around you, and remember that the bonds you’ve formed as scouts will last a lifetime.

Happy Holidays from all of us at 78th Kingswood Scout Group, and we would love to welcome you all back on Wednesday 10th January.

Beavers made the news

Hopefully you have all read about it by now, but just in case you have missed it, our Beavers have made the news this month!

The Downend Voice have printed an article about the fundraising events that our Beavers organised to raise funds for the charity Guide Dogs UK.

The Beavers done 2 events over the last couple of weeks. One was a particular wet one, as they experienced some rain during the sponsored run around the church building, but it did not stop them at all and they enjoyed every minute of it. And then there was the bake sale, where lots of lovely cakes and other treats were sold to the Cubs, Scouts and parents.

In the end, the Beavers have raised an incredible £385 for South Gloucestershire Guide Dogs UK.

So please get yourself a copy of the Downend voice and read all about our Beavers. Published in the December edition on the front page as well as on page 13.

Downend Round Table are having their annual firework display on Friday 3rd November at King George V Playing Fields, Downend, Bristol, BS16 6AH.

Some of our members will be volunteering at the event trying to raise funds for our group.

If you would like to see a fantastic fireworks display, and support many local charitable causes, come and see the fireworks display!

And here is the summer

Which means we have reached the end of another great Scouting season here at the 78th.

And there are definitely some incredible things to look back onto. There have been several camps, like Strategy (for Scouts) and Evolution (for Cubs), and the Scouts have had a great camp at Tintern earlier in May.

Another highlight at the end was there for one of our Scouts, Daniel, who has been awarded the Chief Scout Award. How brilliant is that? He is now moving on to become an Explorer Scout, and we wish him the very best.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out on the news this summer, as the World Jamboree will take place the first 2 weeks of August. The 25th edition of the Jamboree takes place Saemangeum in South Korea.

As for us, we will see you all again in September. The exact date is to be confirmed, but will be shared once we have set the date. Keep an eye out for it on OSM or this website.

Have a great summer everyone!

Evolution 2023

How great was that? Evolution 2023 was the first time we attended this great adventure with our Cubs.

Even though there were only 4 Cubs participating from our unit, it was an incredible time. And for some it was even their first night away.

The weekend was absolutely fabulous, and as expected there was little to no sleep the first night. Not sure if the supplies from the tuck shop helped with this, but spirits were high.

Ready for the main event on Saturday, our Cubs jumped right in to tackle the numerous posts and check points ahead of them. One thing was for sure, they all had a blast.

The evening contained loads of entertainment, and it can be said that this managed to tire out our youngsters, as the night was a peaceful one.

Sunday morning took a bit of persuasion to get the Cubs out of bed for breakfast, but the prospect of the fair managed to get them moving.

It has been an incredible weekend, and we are already planning for next year’s return.

And then the results. Our Cubs participated in the Accompanied category;

Strategy 2023 Results

What a great weekend we have had. All the Scouts have been buzzing and enjoyed every minute of it.

Although it has been one of the hottest editions, this did not stop the teams performing amazingly.

So many activities to choose from, and with some strategic planning beforehand, routes were plotted and the teams went on their adventure. Throughout the day they have shown teamwork and dedication, and have put their skills to the test.

Results are in, and a special shout-out to Team Candace for making 3rd place on Hub C.

There were 336 teams at the event, and our teams ranked as follows:

PlaceTeam Name
24thTeam Phineas
69thTeam Candace
259thTeam Ferb

Well do to all of you. In case you have missed the pictures, they can be found on our Twitter feed

It was a lovely day at Keynsham Scouts HQ today, 6 district teams were going head-to-head in the County Cooking Competition. All teams were focussed, determined and not shy of helping out competitors in time of need. Much camaraderie within the districts, which shows how well Scouts can work together.

The team from our Scouts that competed managed to achieve runner-up within the County. Congratulations to Amina, Lucy, Daisy and Beatrice.

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2023, the beginning of another brilliant year.

We are looking forward to an action packed year. It is going to be a busy one, as some of you might know this year the 25th World Jamboree will take place in Saemangeum, North Jeolla, South Korea.

But many other activities will take place. Some of the ones we can tell you about is the start of the Ten Tors training on Sunday 8th January. And in February there is the County Scout Cooking Competition.

There are some camps to look forward to as well. Scouts will be attending Strategy again in June, the Cubs are interested in attending Evolutions for the first time.

We will have our first meeting of 2023 on Wednesday 11th January, so we will see you then.
