It would have been Strategy this weekend, but due to what is happening in the world we have to miss it this year.
But…. There is a way of still having the Strategy vibe, as the team from S&E are hosting the event online. So we will be able to attend Strategy after all.
When is S&E at Home?
S&E at home will be live from the 19th June to the 28th June. We’re focussing around the 19th -21st June when Strategy 2020 would have taken place but all the activities will be open until the 28th June. The virtual S&E site will open at midday on the 19th.
The event can be joined by anyone in Scouting, and there will be plenty of activities to do with the whole family.
So if you want to get involved, go over to the S&E website and sign up: https://s-e.org.uk/
Hike a mile at home. Make a donation. Take a giant leap to support the people who need it most.
On 23 April, BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief are getting together for their Big Day In on Radio and their Big Night In on TV, a massive fundraising special to celebrate the incredible people making a difference in communities across the UK and to support people who need it most during the corona crisis.
We want Scouts to go the extra mile too. Together, young people, volunteers, parents and carers are going to Hike to the Moon. If we all hike just one mile each – about 2,000 steps or 20 minutes walking on the spot – then together, we can complete the incredible 240,000 mile journey. To hit your one mile target, you can hike around your home or your garden (if you’ve got one) but please be safe and stick within government advice – you don’t need to leave your homes to be part of this.
A message from Bear
How will this help people? We’ll turn our miles into money by getting friends and family to sponsor us to take part and making a donation to this great cause.
You don’t have to wait for 23 April to hike your miles. Get started now by pulling on your walking boots (or more likely, your slippers), recording your miles and making your donation. It took the Apollo XI crew three days to reach the Moon — let’s see how long it takes Scouts!
We want to make this as accessible and inclusive as possible, so if walking’s a challenge for you, we’ve got some great alternative ways to do your miles below. If you can do more than a mile, that’s great (we might even be able to hike back to Earth again). You don’t have to do your steps all at once – you could record them over a day or a number of days.
For this Easter weekend one of our partners, Go Outdoors, is encouraging people to take part in the GREAT BRITISH CAMP OUT FOR THE NHS.
It sounds like an amazing thing to take part in and be able to raise money for the NHS whilst doing it.
If you have the space, why don’t you consider having a CAMP OUT at home? You can setup camp anywhere you like, create a den in your bedroom, camp under the dining room table, or if you have a garden have a camp out.
Make sure that if you take part to let us know, we would love to see how you setup your camp. Photo’s and video’s are much appreciated, and we would love to share this adventure on our social media channels.
To send us your pictures please use our special upload form (only available for this weekend):
We are writing to share critical pieces of information relating to the developing Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.
Late this afternoon, Monday 16th March, the Prime Minister has said that everyone in the UK should now avoid non-essential travel and contact with others.
Given this guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events must be suspended from tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2020. This suspension applies to young people and adults, and will be until further notice.
We must continue to respond to the developing situation in a calm, measured and appropriate way. We will continue to follow official guidance. The safety of everyone involved in Scouts, both young people and adults, is our number one priority. That is always at the heart of our decision making.
Keeping you updated
It is likely that this will impact us for the rest of this term, but we will keep you informed as best as we can.
The Government have now committed to daily briefings. To keep us up to date, Scouts UK have created a webpage: scouts.org.uk/coronavirus which will be updated from tomorrow.
Was it not a great year? With us celebrating our 60th anniversary? And what about all the activities and camps we have enjoyed?
Our group has seen some amazing things this year and we are grateful for all of it. Already we are looking forward to next year, with one of the highlights going to be the Avon Jamboree.
We have enjoyed our Christmas parties this week and are now going to have a break. We would like to welcome you all back in the new year on Wednesday 8th January.
From all of us at 78th Kingswood, have a fantastic half term, and we wish you all happy holidays and a lovely new year.
We are holding our 60th AGM on Wednesday 5th June at 6.00pm. Following on from the success of previous years, we are combining this with a Family BBQ and Fun night. The Scouts will be running some games for everyone to enjoy.
There will be an overview of how the 78th Group is doing, future plans, finances and the current committee members. Group leaders will be on hand to answer questions about group activities.
As part of this year’s Remembrance Sunday, the 78th Kingswood Group is attending the British Legion Remembrance Parade which marches through Staple Hill to Page Park for a very special service of remembrance at the Cenotaph. There will be other groups from the Scouting Association attending, along with members of various armed forces, both past and present.
This is a VERY special occasion and an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to represent themselves positively in front of the older generation. As such, all attendees must be in FULL uniform and wearing a Poppy. Please ensure that your child has a coat, ideally a pac-a-mac or similar that can be packed down small and carried discreetly. If the weather is cold, then extra layers can be worn under their uniform. As a mark of respect we always ensure that full uniform is on display unless it is raining. (This includes black shoes – no trainers, no jeans) Those in full uniform will be selected to be in the Standard Party for each section. It is the 78th’s turn this year to read a prayer.
We will be walking as a group behind the 28th Kingswood Group from their headquarters; so please be at their hut in Christchurch Avenue by Christchurch Infant School at 9:30. Parking is restricted so it is best to park in Shrubbery Road or the Co-op. The Group will walk to where the British Legion at Staple Hill used to be based via Pendennis Road, then as a larger contingent with the Salvation Army Band leading, to Page Park. There will be no parade at this point to the Scout Memorial as this will take place in the evening.
Parents are encouraged to accompany us along the pavements as the parade moves and attend the service in Page Park. Alternatively your child can be collected at the cenotaph at Page Park.
We know that you recognise the significance of this year’s Anniversary commemorations and therefore look forward to seeing the younger generation support this important event.
Twenty years ago the world was a very different place. The reach of technology was limited, and the way organisations used and processed your personal data was very different to how they use it today.
The changes that have happened over the last two decades have forced the European Union (EU) to review the old legislation and bring it up to speed with the modern era. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) raises the standards for processing personal data, to strengthen and unify protection for individuals across the EU. The new legislation comes into force in the UK on 25 May 2018 and will exist post-Brexit.
78th Kingswood Scout Group collects and processes lots of personal data on the young people, adult volunteers and staff. This could be anything from names, addresses, telephone numbers right through to more sensitive data such as religion, ethnicity and disabilities. As a result, it’s important that we are aware of the new legislation and comply with it.
We want to make sure that you as parents/carers know that we are aware of the new legislation and comply with it.
Can you believe it? We are reaching the end of another year, which means we are almost half way through our season. Tonight is our last group night of 2017.
And what an adventure it has been so far, with a fantastic group camp, loads of outdoor activities and getting back into the new building.
We are also looking forward to lots more great activities to come, there are camps in the planning and who knows what else there is in store.
For now we would like to wish you all happy holidays and hope that you will have a great Christmas period. We will be back on Wednesday 10 January 2018.

We will be meeting at the Band Stand in Page Park at 10.30am, where we will then parade as a group to the service area to be positioned by the British Legion. The 78th will be laying a wreath at the cenotaph. When this service is over, we will be walking with the 28th and 85th Kingswood Groups, and the 151 Fishponds,to the Downend Scout Memorial for a small Scouting Service, which this year will be lead by the 85th .
