Scouts are Bowling

The last meeting of the year, and becoming a tradition now we will be going bowling this Wednesday.

So no meeting at the hall but at the bowl plex in Longwell Green. Details have been emailed across.

We hope to see you all and hopefully you will be bowling some strikes to end the year on a high.

In case you are not around, we all wish you are merry Christmas and will see you next year!

As part of this year’s Remembrance Sunday on November 13th, the 78th Kingswood Scout Group are attending the British Legion Remembrance Parade which marches through Staple Hill to Page Park for a very special service of remembrance at the Cenotaph. There will be other groups from the Scouting Association attending, along with members of various armed forces, both past and present.

This is a VERY special occasion and an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to represent themselves in front of the older generation. As such, all attendees must be in FULL uniform and wearing a Poppy. Please ensure that your child has a coat, ideally a pac-a-mac that can be packed down small. If the weather is cold, then extra layers can be worn under their uniform. As a mark of respect we always ensure that the full uniform is on display unless it is raining. (This includes black shoes – no trainers, no jeans).

Full details have been email to the parents/carers. Please contact a member of staff if you have not received the information or if you have any questions.

We know that you recognise the significance of this year’s Anniversary commemorations and therefore look forward to seeing the younger generation support this important event.

Yours in scouting,

The 78th Kingswood Scout Group Committee and Leaders

Investiture

We will be investing a whole lot a new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts on Wednesday 19th October.

Parents are welcome to this very important event, and afterwards we will be serving coffee and tea, and there will be home made cakes to taste as well.

Last year we were successful in obtaining a £1,000.00 grant from Downend Round Table towards the cost of a new trailer. In addition they gave us the opportunity to raise more funds at their annual fireworks display on the 6th November 2015, which realised in excess of £500.

We have now been given the opportunity to help at this year’s fireworks display on the 4th & 5th November 2016. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise money and have a bit of fun at the same time. This is how you can help:

  • We have been given a glow-stick stall to run, for which we need about 12 people, (10 Cubs & Scouts and 2 adults) from 5pm until the close – could you and/or your child give us some of your time to help man the stall? (last year the glow-sticks were sold very quickly at the start of the evening)
  • Adults who will act as stewards at gates, round the bonfire etc. – again could you give us a few hours of your time?
  • Litter picking on the Saturday morning 8 – 10am – for which we need as many child and adult volunteers as we can get! We’re aiming here at beavers and cubs.

Money that the Roundtable save by us carrying out these tasks translates into extra profit that they then return to us in the form of a donation so the more we can help the bigger the donation!

There will be a further opportunity to help them and raise more funds in December when they will be after volunteers to help on their annual Santa sleigh tours around the local streets.

All helpers get free entry to the fireworks and will be provided with High Vis Vests. All young helpers will receive a community staged badge.

Ruth Guilfoyle is main contact (ruth_crabb@yahoo.co.uk ) for the Friday Firework display and Tim Warren (timwarren07@gmail.com) is for the Saturday litter picking.

If you think you can help, please email Ruth or Tim.

Youlbury Group Camp 2016

This year our group camp is at Youlbury Scout Activity Centre in Oxford. We will be camping from Friday 21st until Sunday 23rd October, with our coach leaving on Friday at 6pm so we would like campers to be at the church by 5.30pm.

Kit lists and health forms have been handed out, and we need the health forms filled out and handed back to us as soon as possible.

Beavers and Cubs will be sleeping inside, the Scouts will be camping in tents.

If you have any questions please ask your section leader.

Well done to the Scouts that participated in the ASRC Annual Shooting and Archery Competition. Despite the occasional rain we have had a brilliant day at Chelwood Camp Site.

The day was filled with archery, riffle and air pistol shooting in various disciplines, a wild western style knock down competition and even a taste of clay pigeon shooting.

And the Scouts from 78th Kingswood Scout Group can be proud with the results, in the category Juniors (Under 12’s) Jamie managed to get the top position, Molly gained 6th, Phoebe got 13th, Daniel came 18th and Jack 24th.

The next category was Scouts (12-14 year old), and here we find Zoe got 8th position and Josh got 18th.

And finally the Explorer category (14-18 year old) where Abi managed an impressive 19th position.

Well done to all our Scouts, and we will be back next year.

Bye Bye Jamboree

A day after the end of the Jamboree now and finally unpacked, more or less.

We have had an absolutely fantastic time, and we hope that the Scouts have been telling many stories about what they have experienced at the Jamboree.

It was an adventure for all of them, and hopefully it has inspired them to explore more of the wonderful world of Scouting.

Soon there will be a photo album appearing online with a whole lot of pictures taken at the Jamboree, so that memories can be shared along friends and family.

Yours in Scouting,
The 78th Jamboree team,

Lesley, Mandy, George, Tim and Arnold
