As part of this year’s Remembrance Sunday, the 78th Kingswood Group is attending the British Legion Remembrance Parade which marches through Staple Hill to Page Park for a very special service of remembrance at the Cenotaph. There will be other groups from the Scouting Association attending, along with members of various armed forces, both past and present.

This is a VERY special occasion and an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to represent themselves positively in front of the older generation. As such, all attendees must be in FULL uniform and wearing a Poppy. Please ensure that your child has a coat, ideally a pac-a-mac or similar that can be packed down small and carried discreetly. If the weather is cold, then extra layers can be worn under their uniform. As a mark of respect we always ensure that full uniform is on display unless it is raining. (This includes black shoesno trainers, no jeans) Those in full uniform will be selected to be in the Standard Party for each section. It is the 78th’s turn this year to read a prayer.

We will be walking as a group behind the 28th Kingswood Group from their headquarters; so please be at their hut in Christchurch Avenue by Christchurch Infant School at 9:30. Parking is restricted so it is best to park in Shrubbery Road or the Co-op.  The Group will walk to where the British Legion at Staple Hill used to be based via Pendennis Road, then as a larger contingent with the Salvation Army Band leading, to Page Park. There will be no parade at this point to the Scout Memorial as this will take place in the evening.

Parents are encouraged to accompany us along the pavements as the parade moves and attend the service in Page Park. Alternatively your child can be collected at the cenotaph at Page Park.

We know that you recognise the significance of this year’s Anniversary commemorations and therefore look forward to seeing the younger generation support this important event.

Yours in scouting

The 78th Committee and Leaders

Twenty years ago the world was a very different place. The reach of technology was limited, and the way organisations used and processed your personal data was very different to how they use it today.

The changes that have happened over the last two decades have forced the European Union (EU) to review the old legislation and bring it up to speed with the modern era. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) raises the standards for processing personal data, to strengthen and unify protection for individuals across the EU. The new legislation comes into force in the UK on 25 May 2018 and will exist post-Brexit.

78th Kingswood Scout Group collects and processes lots of personal data on the young people, adult volunteers and staff. This could be anything from names, addresses, telephone numbers right through to more sensitive data such as religion, ethnicity and disabilities. As a result, it’s important that we are aware of the new legislation and comply with it.

We want to make sure that you as parents/carers know that we are aware of the new legislation and comply with it.

Today TSA has launched the new brand and identity for Scouts.

As well as making it easier to talk about Scouting, a new logo, colour palette, free brand font and tone of voice have been introduced. The changes come seventeen years after the last major overhaul of the Scout brand.

Developed in partnership with volunteers, and following consultation and testing with 7,000 people, our new visual identity reflects Scouting in a digital age, while still retaining our strong heritage – including the iconic fleur-de-lis. In testing, both adults and young people responded well to the new brand, with parents saying they were 44% more likely to volunteer after seeing the new materials.

Over the next few days our website will change in line with the new brand guidelines from HQ.

Annual General Meeting

Dear Parents,

As some of you are already aware from the Cub timetable, we are holding our AGM this term on Wednesday 23rd May at 6.00pm. Following on from the success of previous years, we are combining this with a Family BBQ and Fun night. The actual AGM will not take long and we will combine this with an Investiture of our newer Members.

There will be an overview of how the 78th Group is doing, future plans, finances and the current committee members. If you would like to join our committee then you would be most welcome, in whatever capacity you feel you could make a positive contribution to continue making this a thriving group. We always welcome help in whatever form, as the group can only survive with our volunteer leaders and helpers.

Group leaders will be on hand to answer questions about Group Camp in September and group activities. There will also be the opportunity to update you on fund raising and plans etc; and to answer questions.

Group Camp 2018

Dear Parent/Carers,

This year our Group Camp will be at Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre in the New Forest from Friday 28th till Sunday 30th September 2018. This activity centre is one of the best in the South and it is in a beautiful part of the country with fantastic outdoor space.

How about your child having a go at the Gladiator Challenge, various Climbing activities, Zip Wires, Boulders, Tomahawk Throwing, Shelter Building, Team Building activities, Go-Karting, Paddle Games and Raft Building. They also have facilities for Aeroball, Crazy Golf, Volleyball, Frisbee Golf and a fantastic Adventure Course. The site has well over 30 different activities to choose from.

The cost of the whole weekend, which will include a coach to and from the venue, food and all activities for your child will be between £60-£80.

Group Camp is a fantastic opportunity for your child to try new things, surrounded by their friends in a safe outdoor environment. Beavers will be sleeping inside, as will the younger Cubs. Some of the older Cubs will be camping alongside the Scouts. We will have an indoor base with the camping facilities right outside. We have a kitchen to do the cooking in and serve up all the meals (and Cake). We will of course have Arnie’s infamous camp fires, with marshmallows and a sing song, on the Friday and Saturday night. We would aim to leave the church at approx 5pm on the Friday and return by 6pm on the Sunday.

A form will be sent out soon, so please fill in the form and return to one of your child’s Leaders(s). The £20 deposit can be paid via OSM (unfortunately this deposit is non-refundable). Anyone with more than one child will have any other child’s cost reduced by £10.

If you would like your child to go and embrace this fantastic weekend, but you may not be able to raise all the funds required, please talk to John, Lesley, Tim or Mandy and I am sure the Group will be able to help.

Yours in Scouting.

Silver Scout Awards

So another term has come to an end, Easter is almost here so let’s have some well deserved chocolates….

On Wednesday the Cubs ended their term on a fantastic high as no less then 3 of their Cubs have been awarded with the Silver Scout Award! This is the highest award you can get in Cub Scouts.

Well done to Harry, Thomas and Sebastian. And what makes it even better (if at all possible) is that they are moving up to Scouts after Easter. It was a pleasure having these Cubs, and we wish them all the best in Scouts.

Pretty sure that there are some proud parents too.

Earth Hour 2018

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour started as a symbolic “lights out” event in Australia just over a decade ago and is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for our planet and the environment.

Some 187 countries and territories took part last year, and more than 3,100 landmarks went dark.

Why is it Important?

Our planet is under threat from climate change and a staggering loss in biodiversity. Earth Hour is our chance to talk about what this means, and take action.
