Hike To The Moon

Hike a mile at home. Make a donation. Take a giant leap to support the people who need it most.

On 23 April, BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief are getting together for their Big Day In on Radio and their Big Night In on TV, a massive fundraising special to celebrate the incredible people making a difference in communities across the UK and to support people who need it most during the corona crisis.

We want Scouts to go the extra mile too. Together, young people, volunteers, parents and carers are going to Hike to the Moon. If we all hike just one mile each – about 2,000 steps or 20 minutes walking on the spot – then together, we can complete the incredible 240,000 mile journey. To hit your one mile target, you can hike around your home or your garden (if you’ve got one) but please be safe and stick within government advice – you don’t need to leave your homes to be part of this.

A message from Bear

How will this help people? We’ll turn our miles into money by getting friends and family to sponsor us to take part and making a donation to this great cause.

You don’t have to wait for 23 April to hike your miles. Get started now by pulling on your walking boots (or more likely, your slippers), recording your miles and making your donation. It took the Apollo XI crew three days to reach the Moon — let’s see how long it takes Scouts!

We want to make this as accessible and inclusive as possible, so if walking’s a challenge for you, we’ve got some great alternative ways to do your miles below. If you can do more than a mile, that’s great (we might even be able to hike back to Earth again). You don’t have to do your steps all at once – you could record them over a day or a number of days.

More information can be found here: scouts.org.uk/hiketothemoon

So what are you waiting for? We’ll see you on the moon!

Already into our 4th week of great indoor activities. Well done to everyone for being so patiently and keeping up with us.

We have selected another set of activities for you to do whilst at home, and of course you can get your whole family involved in this. It is a great way of showing what you do in Scouts.

Many of you have got a lovely pet, but even if you don’t you can do this activity. You can use your real life experience or you can use your imagination.

Follow this link for the full details of the activity: https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/animal-diary/

You will have the ability to make dessert for tea tonight.

As our virtual meeting was such a success last week, how about trying out some more paper skills?

GO Indoors

For this Easter weekend one of our partners, Go Outdoors, is encouraging people to take part in the GREAT BRITISH CAMP OUT FOR THE NHS.

It sounds like an amazing thing to take part in and be able to raise money for the NHS whilst doing it.

If you have the space, why don’t you consider having a CAMP OUT at home? You can setup camp anywhere you like, create a den in your bedroom, camp under the dining room table, or if you have a garden have a camp out.

Go Outdoors, or for the time being, Go Indoors have got loads of things to do on their special website: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/go-indoors

Make sure that if you take part to let us know, we would love to see how you setup your camp. Photo’s and video’s are much appreciated, and we would love to share this adventure on our social media channels.

To send us your pictures please use our special upload form (only available for this weekend):

We all are trying our best not to get bored, and it must be said that this sometimes is a challenge on its own. But we must say well done for all the effort you are putting into the tasks given to you. Most seem to be very keen in working towards badges from the comfort of your home.

Time to put the gamepads down as we have picked some more activities for this week. Hope you will enjoy these ones.

Part of your uniform is the scarf. It’s a versatile item, and knowing how to fold, roll, shape and take care of one is a great skill to have.

Follow this link for the full details of the activity: https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/super-scarves/

Time to get crafty again. And something that you can turn into a game to play with the family.

Take on the switch off challenge to find a healthy balance between time on and away from screens.

Hoping that you all have been able to have a look at last weeks challenges, we would like to present to you a couple of new ones to take on this week.

Time to put your pioneering skills to the test. For Beavers this week why not try some lolly stick catapults?

In this challenging time it is nice to be nice, or as the activity says: great to be grateful.

Time to start practising those knots again. You might have forgotten how to use rope, so now it the time to get back into it.

Don’t forget to log your progress on OSM, ask your parent/carer to login to the Parent Portal.

JOTI Special Edition 2020

As young people around the world are facing challenges in their local communities, and all Scouting activities have been put on hold for now, it might be great to connect with the Online Scouting community.

This weekend there is a special edition of JOTI, better known as Jamboree On The Internet. It is a great way of meeting Scouts from across the globe, and you can even work towards your communicator badge if you wanted to.

Please check out the special JOTA/JOTI website for more information and how to take part: https://www.jotajoti.info/

We know the coming days and weeks are going to be difficult for families across the UK, as the spread of Covid-19 causes schools to close. As the experts in developing skills and bringing adventure to young people, we want to do what we can to help.

While we normally love the great outdoors, we’ve pulled together some inspired indoor activity ideas (if we do say so ourselves). Keep your kids learning new skills and having fun (and avoid hearing ‘I’m bored’ every 30 seconds) all in #TheGreatIndoors.

We will select an activity each week that you can work on towards achieving a badge. Make sure to record your progress, and let us know how you are getting on. You can use the Parent Portal on OSM for this purpose, just ask your parent/carer to help you with this.

On OSM just look at the badges and see which ones have got a little house icon listed. These are the badges that you can work towards from home.

Example of Badge at Home option

For Beavers this week you could perhaps try a flair of hot air. A brilliant activity to find out how a hot air balloon works.

Find the full description here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/a-flair-for-hot-air/

Although selected for Beavers, it can also be done by Cubs and Scouts.

For Cubs, we ask you to Changing your coat. No, not the you wear outside, but your coat of arms. And you might discover what your local coat of arms is.

Scouts are going to be a blackout poet. Think about that for a moment, and you might find that inner poet in you.

And as mentioned before, progress can be recorder on the Parent Portal on OSM.

Unfortunately The Roaming Rhino Easter Trail has had to be postponed due to the current situation in the U.K.

But a couple of weeks ago the Cubs worked industriously to create a wonderful and thoughtful creation. We have received lots of positive comments and we are justly proud of our creators!

The result of their evening of fun is this wonderful Rhino.

Hopefully the trail can go ahead at a later date. It will at least be on display in our church once it is open again.

Cubs Mother’s Day

This year the Cubs have been busy at home, creating a wonderful gift for their Mums.

Lesley has been busy putting together some home creation packs so that the Cubs could work on it from the comfort of their homes.

We have been sent some wonderful pictures of what has been given to Mums last Sunday. And it is something that we are proud to share with you all. Well done Cubs, it is wonderful to see so much appreciation for your Mum.

Meetings Cancelled

Dear All,

We are writing to share critical pieces of information relating to the developing Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

Late this afternoon, Monday 16th March, the Prime Minister has said that everyone in the UK should now avoid non-essential travel and contact with others.

Given this guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events must be suspended from tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2020. This suspension applies to young people and adults, and will be until further notice.

We must continue to respond to the developing situation in a calm, measured and appropriate way. We will continue to follow official guidance. The safety of everyone involved in Scouts, both young people and adults, is our number one priority. That is always at the heart of our decision making.

Keeping you updated

It is likely that this will impact us for the rest of this term, but we will keep you informed as best as we can.

The Government have now committed to daily briefings. To keep us up to date, Scouts UK have created a webpage: scouts.org.uk/coronavirus which will be updated from tomorrow.
