Sport Relief 2020

Our Scouts have been very busy last Wednesday evening, working their socks off for Sport Relief.

They were faced with half a dozen of challenges, and they all were up for taking part to see how far they could push themselves.

An evening full of energy, finding their limits, but battling through in order to raise money for such a good cause.

We have managed to raise an amazing £60 on this evening, well done Scouts!!

Each year there is a South West Scout Region Cooking Competition. In advance of this and to see the great culinary skills of the Scouts across Avon teams take part in an Avon Scouts Cook Off.

Last Sunday, February 9th, the Avon Scouts Cooking Competition was held at 1st Keynsham Scouts HQ. 6 teams were battling for a place on the leaderboard. 78th Kingswood had 2 teams taking part, and they were having a blast.

This year the meal and table setting should reflect this year’s theme – “Olympics Past, Present and Future “. The theme needs to be reflected throughout the whole aspect of the entry; Dress, Table Decoration, Menu and Food Presentation.

The teams had 2 hours to prepare, cook and serve a 3 course meal, prepared using equipment which would be available in an average camp kitchen.

And the scores are in – Kingswood 78th 1 (Molly, Toby, Olly, Kirsty) came 3rd and Kingswood 78th 2 (Jacob, Sebastian, Anya, Libby) came 4th. A great achievement, considering the scores between 2nd place and 4th place were very close.

Thank you all for participating! Well done.

Happy Holidays

Was it not a great year? With us celebrating our 60th anniversary? And what about all the activities and camps we have enjoyed?

Our group has seen some amazing things this year and we are grateful for all of it. Already we are looking forward to next year, with one of the highlights going to be the Avon Jamboree.

We have enjoyed our Christmas parties this week and are now going to have a break. We would like to welcome you all back in the new year on Wednesday 8th January.

From all of us at 78th Kingswood, have a fantastic half term, and we wish you all happy holidays and a lovely new year.

See you all again in January!

Bag Packing

As you may be aware, we have managed to get a slot at Downend Co-op coming Saturday 16th November (10:00-14:00) to help raise some money by bag packing. We are hoping to be able to have a continuous stream of help throughout the session, without asking anyone to be there for too long.

Please arrive in time for your chosen slot to help out. If you want to do more than 1 session you are welcome to do so. Make sure you wear your uniform as we are representing our group. There is no need for parents to stay, just come and collect your child after his/hers session ends.

Remembrance Day Parade 2019

We are attending the Service of Remembrance at Page Park this Sunday 10th November.

We will meet as usual at the 28th Kingswood Scout Hut (Christchurch Avenue, BS16 5TG) at 9:20 to parade from there with the 28th and 85th Group to Page Road to assemble with other units and the Salvation Band, who will lead the parade at 10:15. We will then parade along Staple Hill High Street behind the band and assemble at Page Park Cenotaph for the service, laying of wreaths and minute silence.
When this service has finished  we (28th, 78th and 85th) will parade to the Downend Cenotaph for a wreath laying and short service lead by the 78th. This normally is finished by midday.

It is imperative that each member is in FULL uniform (no jeans) and wearing their Poppy. Well turned out youngsters will be awarded the honour of being in the Standard Party which leads their pack and are front row at Page Park. Please wear warm clothing underneath uniform and only have a lightweight coat if raining. Parents are encouraged to walk along side on the pavements, but if you can’t attend please ensure your child’s name is recorded as such with a leader.

Macmillan Fundraiser Evening

In one word; WOW! After weeks of planning and a lot of baking that has been done by some of our parents we have had a fantastic evening tonight.

We have had a massive amount of cake, which went well with a cup of tea or coffee. There were games to play, a tombola to win some great prices, name that teddy, lucky dips and custom made key rings.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts loved helping out and they all have had a great evening. And we have managed to raise £322.20 in order to support the great work that Macmillan does.

An absolute amazing amount, thank you very much!

Today at our fundraiser for MacMillan we have had the pleasure to award Matthew and George, 2 of our Cubs, with the Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

Well done for doing all the hard work to achieve this ultimate award in Cubs and good luck with working towards your Gold award in Scouts.

Summer nearly over

Incredibly, summer is nearly over. Only a couple more weeks and we are welcoming Autumn. In fact, we will welcome it whilst going on our group camp.

As the summer holidays draw to a close we are getting ready for the new Scouting year. We know, just like us, you are all exited to begin a new season again. But although schools might be back next week, we will have our first meeting on Wednesday 11th September.

We will see you then!

Summer Is Here

We are approaching the last meeting of this season. Year 2018-2019 is coming to an end and we are going to enjoy the Summer Holidays.

We have turned 60 this year and we are very proud of our group. All our units are going strong, and we even have a waiting list for our group showing that we are a popular group within the community.

It has been a year with great achievements, with a couple of Cubs getting their Chief Scout’s Silver award and a couple of Scouts getting their Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

Our 60th birthday, held during our AGM last June, was a great one as well with many family members visiting us and enjoying the activities and BBQ.

Our Staff members have greatly enjoyed the year and are already looking forward to the next one. We will be back for our first meeting of year 2019-2020 on Wednesday 11th September.

Enjoy the summer, and for those who are interested make sure to visit the 24th World Scout Jamboree website which takes place later this month from 22 July till 2 August.

The Chief Scout’s Gold Award is the highest award that you can achieve in the Scouts section. It is a difficult badge to earn. The young people that have earned this award have shown great commitment and determination, and should all be proud of their achievements.

Today we have been able to hand Jamie and Phoebe their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. They have been working hard to get this badge, and it will give them the drive to pursue the ultimate badge, the Queen’s Scout Award.

Both of them are continuing their journey within Scouting by joining Explorers.

Well done and good luck.
