Dear Parents, Carers,

Although the summer break has ended and most schools are back in session, we are not quite ready yet. Our first meeting back will be on Wednesday 14th September.

Beavers and Cubs will start at 18:00 (with Beavers finishing at 19:15 and Cubs at 19:30), Scouts will start at 19:15 (and finishing at 21:15). Our first meeting will take place at the church, so we will see you all refreshed and well on the 14th!

Yours in Scouting,

Enjoy the summer

We are taking a break this summer to recharge. Although it has been a year with ups and downs, we have managed to entertain so many young people over the last year. Many have experienced new things, some as new members to our group, others having their first under-canvas experience, but all enjoying what we do as Scouts.

Over this year we have been running Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and in total have been entertaining 52 young people in total every week. Not always an easy task but we are all up for the challenge and enjoy working on great programmes every single week.

We have had to say goodbye to two fantastic members, our precious Cub leaders Mandy and Lesley, whom have been with us for over 20 years.

It has been fantastic having you with our group and your experience, enthusiasm and smiles will be not be easy to replace. We are proud to have had you both within our group and wish you well in your next adventures.

And then we also have had the sad news of the passing of one of our longest serving members, John Smith, earlier this month. He will surely be missed by all of us.

Summer is upon us and we welcome you all back on 14th September. We will send out emails nearer the time to remind you.

Enjoy the summer and see you next season!

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness to inform you all of the passing of John Smith, one of our longest serving members of our Scout group.

He was a true inspiration to us and enjoyed supporting the 78th throughout his lifetime. On many occasion he was impressed by the joy and enthusiasm of our youngsters, and would always have time to lend a hand in time of need.

Over the years John has given many an hour to our group, but never complained. Especially during celebrations, either within the Church or within the group, he would light up the place with his always present smile.

We will miss John immensely and our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family.

Big Thank You

A very BIG THANK YOU for your support last Wednesday; The Badminton Road Methodist Church event was a huge success. It was lovely to see so many parents, family and our youngsters enjoying themselves.

We have raised an amazing £456.10 for the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal!

Congratulations to all the Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Rangers and their leaders, families and friends.

A huge thank you also to the parents and youngsters that helped us, and the team that cleared away at the end of the night – it certainly made it easier for us after a long day.

We wish you all a lovely break

This year we will have 19 Scouts taking part in Strategy, and we are all counting down the days till the event. We have send out an email with additional information about Strategy so keep an eye out on your inbox.

Over the next couple of weeks we will put every participant into a group in which they will take on the Saturday challenge and as soon as we have done this we will inform everyone. Also we are putting together an updated version of the kit list, and will email this across when ready.

We are getting excited as this will be our first camp of the year.

Welcome Back

It has been a while that we have been able to update our website. Due to some maintenance problems we have not been able to post new content to our site, which of course is not really what we want to happen as we are a very active group and like to share with you what we are up to.

Over the last couple of weeks our team has been busy going through the thousands of lines of code that our website consists of and have rewritten many of the elements you all see via this site. Please be patient with us, as although our website is now up-and-running again there are still some elements that need attention. Currently our core pages are visible but there are some pages missing that need to be added. This will take our team a little bit more time so please check back regularly.

Badminton Road Methodist Church is holding Platinum Jubilee celebrations on the 25th May for all uniformed groups.

We invite you and your family along with your young uniformed attendee to join us on Wednesday 25th May for an evening of fun, food and celebration.  All monies raised will go to the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal for Bristol Children’s Hospital.

The evening will commence at 6.00pm in the Church with a short service of thanksgiving where our youngest Rainbows and Eldest Scout will be part of the Standard party. We will of course at some point sing the National Anthem. We will then have a short investiture to welcome new members to the uniformed sections and special awards.
There will be a BBQ, soft drinks, tea and coffee with a cake stall; all at great prices! The children (and you!) will have plenty of opportunity to spend small amounts of money on traditional fete games with prizes; with all monies going to our chosen charity.

Many thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you all on the 25th May at 6.00pm

Happy Holidays

Although 2021 might not have been what we hoped it would be, we have been able to do many things regardless of the challenges we have had to face. But we can say that we have made it this far and have become stronger through it.

It was great to see so many happy faces at our end of year celebrations, the Beavers and Cubs have had a blast at their Christmas party in the hall, and the Scouts have had a fabulous time on the ice rink in Avon Valley.

We not only want to thank all our Leaders, Young Leaders and other adults that have kept the Group going in the face of unprecedented circumstances, but also our youth members and parents who have continued to believe in the benefits of Scouting with 78th Kingswood Scout Group.

Enjoy the final weeks of 2021 and we are looking forward to seeing you all again in 2022!

Happy Holidays.

World Toilet Day

The Cubs have been doing activities with Naomi from Badminton Road Methodist Church to raise awareness of the importance of clean water and proper toilets.

We would like to promote the World Toilet Day, which is this Friday 19th November, and be able to donate to a great cause called Toilet Twinning whom are trying to flush away toilet poverty. By twinning your toilet, you help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives. If you like to donate then feel free to hand in your donations next week and we will add it to our total.

Without proper toilets and clean water, people are trapped in a vicious cycle:

  • They’re likely to become sick through sanitation-related diseases
  • Illness means they cannot work or farm their land, so they earn less or grow less food
  • Children often miss school, because they are sick or because they’re busy collecting water
  • Girls often drop out of school altogether when they start their periods if there are no toilets or changing rooms
  • Parents have to pay for medicines or food, so they may fall into debt
  • Women and girls risk being attacked or bitten by snakes as they go to the toilet in the open, especially if the culture dictates that they have to go out at night

Water and sanitation projects enable families to build a toilet, have access to clean water, and to learn about handwashing and other hygiene principles.

Dignity is restored when the whole family can use a private, hygienic toilet at their home and no longer have to squat in the bush.
