GO Indoors

For this Easter weekend one of our partners, Go Outdoors, is encouraging people to take part in the GREAT BRITISH CAMP OUT FOR THE NHS.

It sounds like an amazing thing to take part in and be able to raise money for the NHS whilst doing it.

If you have the space, why don’t you consider having a CAMP OUT at home? You can setup camp anywhere you like, create a den in your bedroom, camp under the dining room table, or if you have a garden have a camp out.

The Great Indoors – Week 3

We all are trying our best not to get bored, and it must be said that this sometimes is a challenge on its own. But we must say well done for all the effort you are putting into the tasks given to you. Most seem to be very keen in working towards badges from the comfort of your home.

Time to put the gamepads down as we have picked some more activities for this week. Hope you will enjoy these ones.

Part of your uniform is the scarf. It’s a versatile item, and knowing how to fold, roll, shape and take care of one is a great skill to have.

JOTI Special Edition 2020

As young people around the world are facing challenges in their local communities, and all Scouting activities have been put on hold for now, it might be great to connect with the Online Scouting community.

This weekend there is a special edition of JOTI, better known as Jamboree On The Internet. It is a great way of meeting Scouts from across the globe, and you can even work towards your communicator badge if you wanted to.

The Great Indoors – Week 1

We know the coming days and weeks are going to be difficult for families across the UK, as the spread of Covid-19 causes schools to close. As the experts in developing skills and bringing adventure to young people, we want to do what we can to help.

While we normally love the great outdoors, we’ve pulled together some inspired indoor activity ideas (if we do say so ourselves). Keep your kids learning new skills and having fun (and avoid hearing ‘I’m bored’ every 30 seconds) all in #TheGreatIndoors.

We will select an activity each week that you can work on towards achieving a badge. Make sure to record your progress, and let us know how you are getting on. You can use the Parent Portal on OSM for this purpose, just ask your parent/carer to help you with this.

On OSM just look at the badges and see which ones have got a little house icon listed. These are the badges that you can work towards from home.

For Beavers this week you could perhaps try a flair of hot air. A brilliant activity to find out how a hot air balloon works.

Strategy Camp Cancelled

In light of the ever evolving Covid-19 situation the Strategy and Evolution team have regrettably taken the decision to cancel Strategy & Evolution 2020.

They have constantly monitored and assessed their position based on the latest information and advice from Her Majesty’s Government and The Scout Association. Along with the advice from the Government this afternoon there was an important statement from Tim Kidd, the UK Chief Commissioner, about Scouting activities halting with immediate effect – https://scouts.org.uk/coronavirus

Meetings Cancelled

Dear All,

We are writing to share critical pieces of information relating to the developing Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

Late this afternoon, Monday 16th March, the Prime Minister has said that everyone in the UK should now avoid non-essential travel and contact with others.

Given this guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events must be suspended from tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2020. This suspension applies to young people and adults, and will be until further notice.

We must continue to respond to the developing situation in a calm, measured and appropriate way. We will continue to follow official guidance. The safety of everyone involved in Scouts, both young people and adults, is our number one priority. That is always at the heart of our decision making.

Keeping you updated

It is likely that this will impact us for the rest of this term, but we will keep you informed as best as we can.

The Government have now committed to daily briefings. To keep us up to date, Scouts UK have created a webpage: scouts.org.uk/coronavirus which will be updated from tomorrow.

Avon Jamboree Postponed

Further to the recent UK Gov announcement about the move from Contain to Delay in regard to the growing pandemic of Covid-19, and the advice from Tim Kidd, UK Scout Commissioner for local areas to review and make the best decisions in a calm, measured and appropriate way.

I have discussed with Isabelle Mills, Camp Chief & Simon Crowden, Deputy Camp Chief, and agreed that due to the impact for Health & Safety on our young people, volunteers, contractors, wider family members, visitors to the event, as well as our financial commitment, to make the difficult decision to postpone Avon Adventure until 2021.

We are very fortunate to have excellent relationships with the North Somerset Show Ground Committee as well as supporting contractors, many of whom have confirmed that they will honour our booking when we will be holding the event between 28 May 2021 and 31 May 2021.

Refunds
Any group that has paid a deposit or paid in full will be refunded the full amount paid.

Lastly, thank you all, for your continued support, keep safe and well, follow all Public Health Guidance and we look forward to seeing you in 2021,

Sport Relief 2020

Our Scouts have been very busy last Wednesday evening, working their socks off for Sport Relief.

They were faced with half a dozen of challenges, and they all were up for taking part to see how far they could push themselves.

An evening full of energy, finding their limits, but battling through in order to raise money for such a good cause.

We have managed to raise an amazing £60 on this evening, well done Scouts!!

Avon Scouts Cooking Competition 2020

Each year there is a South West Scout Region Cooking Competition. In advance of this and to see the great culinary skills of the Scouts across Avon teams take part in an Avon Scouts Cook Off.

Last Sunday, February 9th, the Avon Scouts Cooking Competition was held at 1st Keynsham Scouts HQ. 6 teams were battling for a place on the leaderboard. 78th Kingswood had 2 teams taking part, and they were having a blast.

This year the meal and table setting should reflect this year’s theme – “Olympics Past, Present and Future “. The theme needs to be reflected throughout the whole aspect of the entry; Dress, Table Decoration, Menu and Food Presentation.

The teams had 2 hours to prepare, cook and serve a 3 course meal, prepared using equipment which would be available in an average camp kitchen.

And the scores are in – Kingswood 78th 1 (Molly, Toby, Olly, Kirsty) came 3rd and Kingswood 78th 2 (Jacob, Sebastian, Anya, Libby) came 4th. A great achievement, considering the scores between 2nd place and 4th place were very close.
