Sport Relief a success

On Wednesday 16th March the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all took part in the Sport Relief fund raiser.

We managed to do a wide variety of games so hopefully we will have had a successful evening raising loads of money. At this moment in time we do not have a figure yet but we are positive that it is going to be great.

If you have not managed to bring in a sponsor form it is not too late, or if you would like to make a donation then that can be done as well, just bring it along on Wednesday and we will add this to the running total.

Here is an impression of what we have been doing:

Sport Relief

On Wednesday 16th March we are going to be raising money for Sport Relief, by being as active as possible. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will be using all of the sporting equipment that we own and doing a bit of everything, so we hope that they should be exhausted by the time they get home.

They have been sent home with a sponsorship form this week, but in reality it is difficult to sponsor them as we are not exactly sure what they will do or how many times they will attempt to do it.
Therefore we would be grateful if you could collect all your loose change this week and send it in instead. Hopefully this is a less stressful way to raise some money for a good cause without going through the pain of taking a sponsor form to work! 2 years ago we raised several hundred pounds with our sponsored skip-a-thon, so please give generously.

Next week will be normal times, but no uniform needed. A water bottle and sports kit would be a good idea though.

Cubs 100 Challenge

IMG_0021_Cubs100

The challenge set over half term was for each Cub to put 100 item into their matchbox. The evening before half term they spent some time thinking about what could fit inside, and in the end they all excepted the challenge.

During half term the Cubs have been busy and some of them have managed to fulfil the challenge. Harry, Euan and Tom all got 100 different items inside their matchbox, well done.

Avon Jamboree 2016

There have been some questions regarding the Avon County Jamboree. We will try to answer as many as we can. If you can’t find the information you need just get in touch with us.

One of the questions was ‘What is a Jamboree?
The answer: In Scouting, a jamboree is a large gathering of Scouts who rally at a regional, national or international level. And as the name of this particular jamboree suggests, it is a county event.

So when will the Avon Jamboree take place?
The Avon County Jamboree is taking place from 27th to 30th May 2016 at the Westerleigh Showgrounds.

What activities will there be?
Well, there will plenty of activities on offer, ranging from grass sledging to bungee runs, from Quidditch to archery, and there will even be the opportunity to play African drums. Just go and have a look on the Avon Jamboree website to see what is all on offer.

Who is doing all the cooking?
This will be done by a catering company who are specialised in catering for large groups. If you want to find out more, there is a sample menu available on the Avon Jamboree website.

Where are you going to sleep?
We will be camping in tents in the Kingswood subcamp.

What to do next?
We are now taking bookings for Scouts and Cubs who wish to attend. The total cost of the event for each participant is £60 which covers; Camping, Activities and Catering. A payment option is available via OSM, but we would like to know who likes to attend before sending out payment requests. To ensure a place, a non-returnable deposit of £30 is required by Wednesday 17th February (although there is some grace in this) and the final payment of £30 by the end of March. Just let us know on Wednesday evening who likes to attend or fill out the form below.

Burns’ Night at Scouts

[quote_box_center]Burns’ Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns’ contribution to Scottish culture. Burns’ best known work is “Auld Lang Syne”.[/quote_box_center]

This year at Scouts we will be celebrating this event by cooking Haggis on a campfire. It is going to be fire-lighting challenge, and the Scouts will only have the wood they collect, some tinder and kindling, and a flint striker to get a fire going.

When the haggis is being server, we will read the “Address to a Haggis”. This is an ode that Robert Burns wrote to the Scottish dish. At the end of the reading, the haggis is ceremonially sliced into two pieces and the meal begins.

Address to a Haggis

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye worthy o’ a grace
As lang’s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
‘Bethankit’ hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect scunner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither’d rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He’ll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis

Address to a Haggis Translation

Fair and full is your honest, jolly face,
Great chieftain of the sausage race!
Above them all you take your place,
Stomach, tripe, or intestines:
Well are you worthy of a grace
As long as my arm.

The groaning trencher there you fill,
Your buttocks like a distant hill,
Your pin would help to mend a mill
In time of need,
While through your pores the dews distill
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour wipe,
And cut you up with ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like any ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm steaming, rich!

Then spoon for spoon, the stretch and strive:
Devil take the hindmost, on they drive,
Till all their well swollen bellies by-and-by
Are bent like drums;
Then old head of the table, most like to burst, ‘The grace!’ hums.

Is there that over his French ragout,
Or olio that would sicken a sow,
Or fricassee would make her vomit
With perfect disgust,
Looks down with sneering, scornful view
On such a dinner?

Poor devil! see him over his trash,
As feeble as a withered rush,
His thin legs a good whip-lash,
His fist a nut;
Through bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit.

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his ample fist a blade,
He’ll make it whistle;
And legs, and arms, and heads will cut off
Like the heads of thistles.

You powers, who make mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill of fare,
Old Scotland wants no watery stuff,
That splashes in small wooden dishes;
But if you wish her grateful prayer,
Give her [Scotland] a Haggis!
